A Little Bargemusic

March 10, 2017

As one of the world’s premier cultural capitals, New York City offers some of the greatest musical experiences anywhere. While most travelers have heard of the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, few know about Bargemusic, one of the city’s finest chamber music venues. More than four decades ago, Olga Bloom gave up a successful career as a violinist and violist to found Bargemusic. Buying a 100-foot steel barge that had for decades transported sacks of coffee, Ms. Bloom converted the vessel into a chamber music hall. Now moored at Brooklyn Harbor, for over forty years, Bargemusic has presented concerts five days a week. You will not find more acclaimed musicians anywhere in the city. If you come for an evening concert, you’ll have the pleasure of watching the sun set over lower Manhattan: behind the stage is a floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the East River. And during the warmer months, you can stroll over to the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory during intermission to enjoy one of their many homemade flavors
