Celebrate Mother's Day the Japanese Way

May 01, 2017

If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to celebrate Mother’s Day in New York, then you’re in luck. This year, mom’s big day coincides with one of NYC’s major spring festivals, Japan Day. On Sunday, May 14, Central Park’s Bandshell and Rumsey Playfield host this celebration of Japanese culture amid the springtime resurgence of sakura and momo blossoms. You’ll see what it’s like to man the helm of one of Japan’s famed bullet trains in a thrilling simulation that takes you careening through some of the country’s most beautiful and distinctive scenery. Anime fans and lovers of pop culture will enjoy the costumed characters eager for photo ops. Representatives from the Japanese American Association of New York will teach you the traditional art of calligraphy, and the Origami Therapy Association will show you how to craft creatures nearly as enchanting as the surrounding flowers.

Location: Central Park, main entrance on 69th Street and Fifth Avenue
